Is it any different to training a hearing dog?
Well, having trained and lived with a deaf dog for the last 9 years, I would say it’s not that different. Sometimes it’s actually easier.
They aren’t so easily distracted, they don’t get frightened of fireworks or other loud noises, and you can even open the fridge door without them knowing, it’s great !!
So, as long as you train your basics (using hand signals), it’s very much the same.
But obviously because you can’t get there attention with your voice, you have to rely on them looking at you, So having focus and a very reliable ‘check-in’ are essential.
